5 Must See Waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge
Beginner Friendly Hikes
First and foremost, there are so many incredible waterfalls here in Oregon which is why I chose to limit it to beginner friendly hikes in the Columbia River Gorge. Also at this time many other popular waterfalls are unfortunately closed due to fires and landslides however this has further helped me narrow down my choices. Before hiking always research and check the status of the trail!
Now, on to the good stuff…Don’t feel like reading? Scroll down to watch my YouTube video!
Dry Creek Falls
Starting in the order of furthest from Portland, getting to this waterfall is a little tricky. Be sure to use an app like AllTrails so you know you’re at the right trailhead..
The trailhead does not say Dry Creek Falls so if this is the sign you see you’re in the right place!
This is an easy 2 1/2 mile hike with a gradual elevation gain of 1,059 feet.
Although this waterfall is only 74 feet tall, you will still be in awe standing next to it!
2. Multnomah Falls
This waterfall is an Oregon classic and one the whole family can enjoy, It’s definitely a must see if you’re in the area. With a height of 620 feet, it is the tallest waterfall in Oregon and second tallest in the United States. You can see it without having to hike too far however, if you’d like to get another perspective its an easy 1 mile hike with 823 feet of elevation gain.
3. Wahkeena Falls
This 242 foot tall waterfall is another one you don’t have to hike far to see however if you want more of a challenge, this 1 1/2 mile trail with an elevation gain of 915 feet has many amazing views along the way. There is also a bonus waterfall on the trail called Fairy falls.
4. Bridal Veil Falls
This is a short but sweet half mile hike with an elevation gain of 78 feet to the 118 foot tall waterfall.
If you’re looking for more of a challenge and a less known view of these falls, head to the upper section of Bridal Veil.
Getting here is tricky and you must follow careful directions. It is a very steep and slippery hike therefore it is not recommended for animals or children.
Upper Bridal Veil Falls
5. Latourell Falls
With stunning views all around, this hike brings you up close and personal to the powerful 249 foot tall waterfall. The hike is a 2 mile loop with an elevation gain of 633 feet. Personally this is one if my favorites because it reminds me of Iceland, be sure to check this one out!
If you’re new to hiking, always remember to tell a friend or family member that isn’t coming with you where you plan to hike along with a time frame of when you think you’ll be back and also when to worry if they don’t hear from you. Better to be safe than sorry!
Bring a backpack with food, water, a headlamp, first aid kit, matches, map and any other items you feel you may need. I personally like to download the maps on my phone and bring an external battery with a charge cord. That way my phone stays fully charged and I can always see the trail even when I don’t have service.
I hope this blog helps you on your next adventure and inspires you to get out and start hiking! Thank you for reading and if you haven’t already, check out my YouTube channel!!
